Jorn Bruggeman has worked as Senior Scientist at PML since 2013. His primary interest is the representation of species composition, biodiversity and size structure in marine ecosystem models. His work on this topic involves development of unified, species-agnostic population models, exploration of quantitative traits and trade-offs, and the development of efficient methods for simulating species diversity and adaptation. At PML, these ideas are combined to develop the European Regional Seas Ecosystem Model (ERSEM) into a modular model that adjusts its detail and complexity in response to scientific questions and computational constraints. jbrNOSPAM@pml.ac.uk
I carried out my PhD at Bangor University on laboratory experiments and modelling of the synchronisation of algal cell division under light:dark cycles. I then went to work at the Fisheries Laboratory in Aberdeen on herring stock assessment. During my time in Aberdeen I carried out research and modelling on fish recruitment processes, zooplankton population dynamics and nutrient cycling in inshore ecosystems. Then, in 2010 I moved to the University of Strathclyde and focussed on development of end-to-end (microbes to megafauna) models of shelf sea ecosystems, with a particular emphasis on simulating fishery yields and the impact of fisheries on the ecosystem. This is the research area that I am bringing into MERP. ..Read full biography
Tom is a Royal Society University Research Fellow in the Department of Animal & Plant Sciences, University of Sheffield. He is a macroecologist by training, interested in explaining large scale patterns and dynamics in biodiversity, and he is a founding member of the British Ecological Society’s Macroecology Special Interest Group. He has worked on various different systems, and is interested in increasing communication between marine ecologists and the ecological ‘mainstream’, for instance through the Planet Earth, Planet Ocean Tansley Working Group he is currently leading. ..Read full biography t.j.webbNOSPAM@sheffield.ac.uk
Jessica is a Project Manager at Plymouth Marine Laboratory. She has a BSc in Psychology and MSc in Marine Policy and extensive experience in EU projects working in a dual capacity as project manager and science communicator. She will oversee the management and coordination of the work plan for this broad progamme. ..Read full biography
